Painting of a Boy Fishing

painting of a boy fishing

This painting of a boy fishing depicts a scene very familiar to me. I have spent many summer days crouched on a river bank or at the edge of a lake holding a fishing rod waiting for the fish to bite. My goal for this artwork, painted in watercolor and gouache paint, was to keep the surrounding and background details to a minimum, similar to creating a very shallow depth of field in a photo. I wanted the painting to feel as I did when I fished just like this – all the focus is on the fishing, the wait, and nothing else around matters. It is all about peace, patience and the sort of natural concentration that comes over us when we are in our element.

Excellent Otter Boyd, even from his back, we get the impression of his earnestness to keep still and catch that big fish, any second the fish will bite and this boy will suddenly leap up with excitement to haul it onto the grassy bank.

Yes exactly! That is why he is crouched rather than sitting fully. He’s always ready to spring into action when the big bite happens! 🙂
