Pickerel Weed in Flower

pickerelweed in pond

Some of my favorite Muskoka fishing spots look amazing at this time of year. Massive colonies of pickerel weed growing in shallow water are in peak bloom. The blue-purple flowers, reminiscent of lavender, bring a rare display of spectacular color to the ponds. I didn’t catch any fish that day but seeing the lakes and ponds putting on a show like this made it a great outing anyway!

The blue ‘bonnets’ against the black background look wonderful, not to mention the reflection in the foreground.

Thanks, I’ve usually only seen small stands of pickerel weed in flower but to see such a massive colony in full bloom all at once was amazing. Right now there are acres and acres of lavender colored flowers blooming in some of the shallow ponds!

Hello Otter! I came here because I liked that last photo so much I was going to use it for my desktop wallpaper, but the resolution isn’t quite high enough, but that’s OKAY. It was nice to view these photos on the ‘big screen’, instead of my phone, which is what I usually do.

Glad to see you back on track, but don’t get too occupied with all of ‘us’ out here in cyberland and not enough you-time.

Near where my family and I went on summer vacation, in Canada, growing up, there was a river called the York River. I remember it looking a lot like this. It wasn’t as pristine as this, but it was quiet and calm. I always wanted to fish there, but never did. I just felt there were some BIG ones there, and I wanted to catch them! 🙂

I’m glad you like the photo. Perhaps sometime I’ll make some wallpapers but it’s a little tricky since there are so many different resolutions and aspect ratios required to cover all the bases for everyone.

There are a number of rivers called “York River” and one of them is in Haliburton, not too far away from me. Some of the other provinces have a York River too. There is something about water like this that makes you just know the fishing must be worth a try. There are dozens of spots like this I’ve seen in passing and each time I set eyes on the water, even if it’s just a glimpse from a speeding car, I get a strong feeling there are big ones lurking just beyond my reach.
