Postcard From Otter – Winter Wonderland

Otter Boyd boy in snow at mailbox in winter landscapeIt has been a while since I sent you a postcard so I wanted to send this one to show the place where postcards end up: In mailboxes. Here I am at the mailbox at the end of my driveway.

I sometimes feel scared going down to the mailbox by myself but it’s something we all experience and come to terms with. Over time everyone gets used to being so far from the safety of home, with nobody around for miles, and nothing but bears, wolves and moose lurking all day just waiting to pounce on anyone sprinting back to the house clutching an envelope. I’m starting to get used to it too.

Bears, wolves and moose are enough of a challenge, as I am sure they are for you each day too, but at my size I have to watch out for the large owls and hawks as well. Getting carried off to a treetop nest or high altitude feeding perch is always such a hassle. Dad doesn’t believe that big birds of prey enjoy preying on little Boyds but how else do I keep getting myself on the roof, stuck in the tops of trees or in all the other dangerous places I’m not supposed to climb? It’s those mischievous raptors of course!

Dad came up with a plan to help me feel more safe when I go out to check the mail. He said that if I’m getting attacked by bears, wolves or moose I should put the flag up on the mailbox. When he notices that signal he’ll come out and look for me. If I’m getting attacked by birds of prey I should put one of my mittens on the flag with the thumb pointing in the direction of the treetop nest I’ll be stuck in. When I’m just playing, or as he puts it “up to the regular sort of suspicious diabolical Otter activity“, I should leave the flag down. That pretty much covers all the possibilities of things that might happen to me when I go outside to play.

This winter, besides checking the mailbox and ending up in high places, I have been playing hockey, skating on the backyard pond, tobogganing and building snow forts. It has been very cold and we have lots of snow but that makes it the most fun. I hope you all are having a fun winter too. I’ll send you another postcard soon!
