I’ve been back on duty all weekend as the official Midgetshipman on the Muskoka Lake steamships down at the Gravenhurst wharf. My captain is so pleased with my work that every time I show up at his door he quickly sends me away again to keep looking for pirates. This work is so important to him and the fleet that he doesn’t even take a moment to talk to me. He just raises his hand, points to the docks and tells me to “Scram!” (if you haven’t heard about my important job then please see this post)
Today I wanted to talk to Captain about a big idea I have for the steamships. I wouldn’t leave him alone this time even when he started pounding his head on his desk. The awful thumping and groaning sound he made was most distracting but I managed to maintain my focus just long enough to share the suggestion. I told him that even though summer holidays are over, and a lot of the cottagers and tourists are gone, I think it would be nice if they keep running the boats on the lake so people can see the amazing Fall colors. Captain said it was a great idea! They will run the boats until about October 9 specially so people can enjoy the Fall colors while out on the water. Then I was told to scram again.
Captain held his head in his hands as I left so I’m sure he wants me to rush around and find some ice or aspirins for his headache and get back to him as soon as possible. I just wanted to get this quick postcard out there first so everyone would have lots of time to plan their trip to the lake to see the Fall colors.
The colors are quickly approaching peak in Muskoka so the best time to visit Gravenhurst and take a trip out on the lake would be before the end of the month. Next weekend would probably be perfect and the weekend after will be good as well. I’m thinking I might even take a trip out there too, if Captain ever gives me some time off work. But, I know how much he depends on me so I’m not counting on it!

Fantastic photo of those steamships – hilarious to read Midgetshipman Otter’s account of his important role as aide to the Captain.
Hope he has time to write more as I would surely take passage on one of these steamships to see Fall colors.

Thanks, I will keep having adventures and then painting, taking pictures and writing about them. If you end up taking a tour on a steamship I might even see you there!

Poor you, Otter, you must be exhausted, chasing about looking for those pirates. It was a very good idea of yours to ask the Captain to keep sailing those handsome steamships. What a wonderful trip, to spend some time sailing through the incredible colors of a Muskoka Fall. I haven’t seen it for some years, but when I show the photographs to my friends, they are convinced that I have photoshopped the images, the colors are so vibrant. Wish I could pop over and take one of those trips.

Thank you, yes the Fall colors are amazing and I bet it would be great to see them from a steamship. I thought the views were incredible just from my canoe.
